BOMs Away – Floating Stars April

I made great progress on my Quilts of Valor leader/ender project…right up till I counted the remaining background blocks.

Yeah, so, I thought it was a nearly never ending stack of those 6″ flag squares, but apparently it’s not! I’m going to run out at eleven blocks, and that’s only because our QOV chapter fabric hoarder coordinator found four more squares. It was cut by someone else, so there’s no selvage and no one who knows what the fabric is…not even Google! For a while I debated how I could solve this dilemma… Nine squares with wide top and bottom borders? Ten squares in a 3×4 layout with something in the middle? Turn everything on point?

Eventually I went with the obvious scrappy solution – make 13 blocks with entirely new backgrounds, mix ’em up, and have two quilts. I mean, duh – I’m not lacking in patriotic background fabric AT ALL. I also have a decent stack of reds and blues in not-quite-scrap and not-quite-fat-quarter size. This should cut those down to true scraps. And it’s a nice and easy leader/ender. And since I’m saving the bonus triangles, this gives me another well-rounded set.

So now I’m at ten out of 24 blocks, and I cut up another stack of five to keep me going through all the rest of the monthly piecing. How did you do on your BOMs this week? You can link up here or at What a Hoot!

That’s thinking outside the box, or outside the blocks! When in doubt, sew another whole quilt. 🙂

Great idea for a great cause! Thanks for linking up!

This leader/ender project is coming along nicely! I’m always impressed with quilters who do this. For me, I think I’d have a tough time sewing two projects at once! Thanks for sharing on Midweek Makers!

Great solution to your problem, and the blocks are great.

I love the way you think, just make it a bigger or more time consuming project. that is what I would have done too.

Those background flags look so familiar…. but your solution will be great. I am not good at BOMs so I don’t tend to do them. Heck, I start then not finish and end up with a UFO. So for now, I’ve decided not to start them.
