What Air Force Boys Are Made Of – Finished!

Snips and snails and puppy dog tails…yes, all that, plus mustaches, airplanes, and superheroes. That’s what Air Force boys are made of. {I happen to be an expert on this subject!}

When Jennie of Porch Swing Quilts asked me to pattern test, I said sure…but can I use scraps? She had no problem with this, so I dove into my blues, greens, dots, stripes and novelty prints to come up with a very cool-toned baby boy quilt from her Five Spot pattern.

There really are snails, and puppy dog paw prints, and other little boy things scattered throughout the quilt. But my favorite? I fussy-cut Pennsylvania {the mother’s home state}, New York {the father’s home state} and North Dakota {where the sweet baby began, although he was born in Germany. Darn it all, I didn’t find a world map fabric in time!}

The quilting is a boxy stipple, with the parents’ and baby’s initials written in the middle. {Yes, I need to work on the scale of my quilt-writing.} Oh, and the father is our best man from our wedding, and my husband was their best man. I’ve known Bryant as long as I’ve known my husband – literally, I met them at the same event in college.

I love how the boxy stipple looks on a soft minky back!

The binding is a blue stripe that I keep using in quilts, in scrap projects, as binding….and still there’s more of it. I think there’s a little breeding going on when I’m not in the sewing room to keep an eye on it. There’s some in the quilt, so it seemed like a good finishing edge as well.

All in all, a perfect baby quilt. Four blocks make it 45″ square, the perfect cuddling size.

My ALYOF goal, and on the FAL list, too!

Congrats on the finish. It’s a perfect quilt for a baby boy. Love all the fussy cuts, looks like a good way to use up a few scraps.

This is such a fun quilt story! I love the initials quilted in there (what’s wrong with the scale??) and the states fussy cut. Super nice finish!

I totally love it. A nice hidden I spy. My favorite part (besides the Minky backing) is the states.
